Driving Traffic to your Website
Web traffic is an important aspect of your marketing plan. Even though you built a grand website with all the flashy graphics and lead tracking abilities, if no one can find your website, you won’t get the traffic you need. Besides having your website on your business cards, letterhead, emails, and even your outgoing envelopes, that won’t help you alone.
The next step to take is to update your website so that search engines can catalog your website, also known as Search Engine Optimization. Making small changes in your code can help users find your website with ease. Here are a few tips to get you started. These examples are based on using Internet Explorer for your browser.
Title – Your page title content comes up in the blue task bar in the top of your Internet Explorer window. This is one of the most important places to have your company’s name or product on your website. When people do a search, the content in the section of the webpage’s header code is usually the information that comes up in the search engine results for people to click and go to your website. Three to nine words for the title is appropriate. Be sure to make unique titles for each of your content pages.
Meta Description – Another place of high interest is the META section. The META description shows up in many search engine results as a summary of your site. No more than 30 words or 180 characters (including spaces) should be used for this content.
Meta Keywords – Within the META data is also a place for keywords. Don’t go overboard on this section, about 20 words will suit it well. Use the best words to describe your business, product, service area., etc.
Heading Tags - At least one heading tag <h1> should appear at the top of your page and be well written using prime keywords and keyword phrases. This is also effective if you are using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) on your website.
Some things to avoid doing are:
- - having hidden text within the content
- - using irrelevant words
- - creating multiple pages or sub domains with the same content
With these few tips, you should be able to start driving traffic to your website. Good luck!
